How it works

From a photo to a next step, in four moves.

EpivaScan is built to be picked up and used without training. Here is what happens between opening the app and knowing what to do next.

Step 01

Capture the area

Open EpivaScan and photograph the patch of skin you’re concerned about, or upload a picture you already have.

A sharp, well-lit photo matters more than anything else. The tips further down this page take ten seconds to follow.

Step 02

The model takes a look

The photo is passed to the EpivaScan model, which compares what it sees against the skin conditions it has been trained to recognise.

More about the model

Step 03

Read the matches

You get a ranked list of conditions. Each one carries a percentage showing how strongly the photo matches it, with the closest match at the top.

Step 04

Take it to a clinician

Use the result as a starting point. Show it to a health worker or doctor, who can examine the skin, ask the right questions and confirm what is going on.

Reading the result

What the percentages do and don’t mean.

Each percentage is the model’s confidence that the photo looks like that condition. It is not the chance that you have it.

A high percentage is not a diagnosis. Only a clinician who can examine the skin can give one.

Closest matches

Example
  • Atopic dermatitis (eczema)64%
  • Psoriasis19%
  • Tinea (ringworm)11%
  • Other / unclear6%

One clear leader

The photo strongly resembles one condition

A good prompt to ask a clinician about that condition specifically. It still needs confirming in person.

Several close together

The model isn’t sure

Try a clearer photo. If the spread stays even, treat the result as inconclusive and ask a professional.

Nothing fits

It may be outside what the model knows

EpivaScan can only match against conditions it was trained on. A low match never means “nothing is wrong.”

Getting a good photo

Better picture, better read.

Use good light

Daylight near a window is ideal. Avoid harsh flash and deep shadow.

Fill the frame

Hold the phone about a hand’s width away so the area takes up most of the picture.

Keep it sharp

Tap to focus, hold steady, and retake the photo if it comes out blurred.

One area at a time

Scan each patch separately, with nothing covering it: no hair, clothing or cream.

Know the limits

What EpivaScan doesn’t do.

A photo is only part of the picture. Being clear about that is part of using the tool safely.

  • It doesn’t diagnose. It suggests which conditions a photo resembles. A clinician confirms.
  • It doesn’t prescribe.Treatment decisions belong to a qualified health professional.
  • It can’t examine you.It can’t feel texture, take a history or see the rest of your skin.
  • It isn’t for emergencies. If something is painful, bleeding, spreading or changing fast, seek care now.
